Travelling around with our family, we wanted to go on as many forms of transport as possible. On top of the transport list was going on the last regularly running sleeper train in Japan which we could get from Okayama to Tokyo. After doing a bit of research and realising the vegan options were a little bit limited, we were pleased to have found CBD Green!
CBD Green is a CBD store and fully vegan cafe in Okoyama with 5 plant-based meals, as well as a variety of drinks and desserts. Just 4 min away from Okayama station, it’s the perfect spot to have a spot of lunch or dinner.
I have since visited CBD Green again and tried nearly all of the items on the menu. So, if you’re looking for a great vegan option in Okayama, you’re in the right place!

The space

Their cafe has a very calm and chilled atmosphere, featuring wood throughout the space from its countertops to tables and chairs as well as its product display shelving. They also have plants throughout the cafe which adds a pop of green to the space and works well with the laid-back vibe.

The CBD products are displayed in the first half of the cafe. Not only do they sell CBD products but eco products as well – such as eco bags, reusable cutlery and beauty products.
CBD Green menu

The food served at CBD Green is a hybrid of Western meets Japanese cuisine, a modern Washoku! The menu comes both in English and Japanese and it’s a little black book with all their main meals and drink options displayed in it. They have a small but solid selection of 5 vegan mains as well as cakes, and a wide selection of cold drinks, alcohol and smoothies.

Plant Base Plate

This colourful plate is filled with rice and 7 different vegetable side dishes including a soy meat dish and a soup. The two times we have ordered this, the side items have been slightly different. We received corn soup for the first time and minestrone-like soup the next time we visited, I like that they mix it up!
This meal is so flavoursome and super nourishing! There were so many different textures and flavours to explore in this dish. For many, this could be the first time trying some of the vegetables such as yamaimo which is a type of yam, lotus root and bamboo.
I love this style of eating where you get to try lots of different dishes and flavours during a single meal. It actually reminded me a little of this cute vegan restaurant in Nara!
Price: ¥1,250 (£6.89/ $9.03)
Plant Base Curry – Katsu curry

This curry is super tasty and fragrant! It’s a generous portion of rice and curry which comes topped with the most amazing and crispiest soy meat. They have such a satisfying crunch to them. The curry also comes with three side vegetable dishes.
Price:
Katsu curry ¥1,300 (£7.17/ $9.39)
Vegetable curry ¥1,200 (£6.62/ $8.67)
Plant Base Pizza – half

A plant-based pesto and tomato pizza that comes with vegan cheese – it’s a bit of a rarity! It also comes with 5 small vegetable dishes including a soup. It was so yummy we regretted not getting the full-sized pizza! All the meals come out on such nice plates and bowls too.
We also ate some amazing vegan pizza in Hiroshima!
Price:
Half a pizza ¥1,250 (£6.89/ $9.03)
Whole pizza ¥2,000 (£11.03/ $14.44)
Plant Base Donburi Bowl

This is a rice dish topped with mock egg, onions, crispy katsu and seaweed as well as three side vegetable dishes. I was very eager to try the donburi bowl when I saw it on the menu as I was curious about what a mock egg would be like!
To me, it definitely wasn’t like what I remember egg being like. The mock egg was more of a creamy paste filled with onions on top of the rice but it was tasty nonetheless! Once again, the crispy soy meat’s the show-stopper for me, it’s just so deliciously crunchy.

Price:
Oyakodon (mock chicken and egg) ¥1,200 (£6.62/ $8.67)
Katsudon (crispy mock chicken and egg) ¥1,300 (£7.17/ $9.39)
Chocolate Brownie & Carrot cake

If I remember correctly, these were both raw cakes and one of the best raw cakes I have ever eaten! The chocolate brownie is small but the perfect portion, it’s soft, smooth and deliciously rich!

And the carrot cake… Oh my goodness it was DEVINE! It doesn’t look like much but it was sweet, perfectly spiced and had chewy raisins in it. I wish I could eat it again!
Smoothie

We ordered the blueberry smoothie as well as the chocolate banana smoothie which came with free CBD topping. Such yummy smoothies which were so lovely and thick!
