If you don’t go into the city, vegan burgers aren’t that readily available here in Japan. To be honest, even when you do go into the city, it can be difficult to find a truly decent vegan burger. So far, the only other place I’ve eaten one was at “Komeda is”, which was tasty but, not like the usual burgers as it was rather sweet!
Unlike back home in England where vegan burgers were the vegan options in a lot of restaurants, Japan seems to have a distinct lack of them on almost all menus that I’ve come across.
After nearly half a year without one, we had such a BIG craving for a dirty burger and that’s when I discovered Superiority Burger. A vegan burger restaurant in Shimokitazawa and it was the perfect excuse to go and explore this trendy neighbourhood!
There’s also this vegan bakery in Shimokitazawa, have you checked it out yet?

About Superiority Burger
If you’re from NY or have visited there before, you may be familiar with Superiority Burger. It’s one of the most popular burger shops in New York, renowned for its innovative meat-free burgers made from chickpeas, lentils and quinoa.
In October 2019 it opened its first shop in Japan, bringing the relaxed ‘East Village’ concept to Shimokitazawa, Tokyo.
The space
This small restaurant is decorated with white subway tiles, hints of concrete, a wall made up of speakers, as well as seating made from basketballs, totally giving off NYC vibes.
They have limited seating (on slightly uncomfortable and awkward basketballs), with space for maybe 5 people indoors and 2 outdoors, as well as a tall table outside where you can stand and eat.
Superiority Burger Menu
With 8 burgers, 1 hot dog, 3 sides, and a dessert menu, it’s safe to say you won’t be without an option! The vegan burger store has original items on its menu in addition to the popular items from New York – The Yuba Creation burger, for example, is only served in Japan!
Keep an eye out for the monthly changing homemade gelato flavours, too. When we visited they had chocolate, milk ‘n’ kinako cookie and black sesame. Yum!
The food at Superiority Burger
All set meals come with crunchy potatoes and a drink!
Fried Tofu Burger
How did it taste?
Firstly, I was shocked by the size of the burger, there is just so much inside – a very chunky burger with such a soft and delicious bun. The fried tofu is very well seasoned and so gloriously crispy that you wouldn’t even know it’s tofu. Inside the burger, there were also pickles and a creamy mayonnaise-like sauce – hearty and mouthwateringly good!

Crunchy Potatoes
How did it taste?
Just like they say in the name, they are crunchy potatoes – which have been seasoned lightly with salt. And the skin has been left on which is my favourite, adding to the taste of these yummy potatoes. A perfect pairing for any burger!

Fried Tofu Nuggets
How did it taste?
These perfectly bite-sized goodies have been seasoned in the same flavours as the tofu burger. They’ve got such a good bite and the texture is honestly quite astounding.

Other information
In the restaurant, they have free tap water or ‘superiority water’ which is filtered tap water with yuzu in it. The citrus fruit makes the water so refreshing and it’s once again, the perfect pairing for when you’re eating slightly greasy foods!

Superiority Burger was a game-changer! As a vegan in Japan, I’m always on the lookout for delicious and crave-satisfying plant-based options in Tokyo, and this burger did not disappoint. What really set this restaurant apart, was how it differed from Japan’s usual vegan offerings.
Whilst a lot of Japanese vegan places still focus on weight loss and macrobiotic or organic meals, Superiority Burger (which originates from New York), serves hearty, indulgent and delicious food!
If you’re ever in the area, do yourself a favour and check it out!
